22/11/11 Editing

Today we edited what we filmed over the weekend. Firstly we uploaded the videos from the camera, then imported them onto our premier file. We then went through the shots and decided which ones were usable and which ones weren't. While doing this we found that we didn't actually capture a good enough shot of the spinny shot as it was again too jumpy and the speed wasn't equal the whole scene. Another shot that we found wasn't good enough, was the shot of my reaction for the split screen shot. The shot looks okay, but the camera is too far away and it doesn't clearly show my reaction to winning. Apart from them two faults, the rest of the stuff we re shot such as the train scene and the exit and entrance via the stairs were fine, but because we didn't achieve an adequate standard for the others, we are yet again re filming them so that our production will look professional.

Last Thursday and Friday we were not in school so we decided to use this time to re shoot some of the shots that we got feedback on from our first cut. Over the weekend we re shot the train lip syncing. This had to be done again as the lip syncing wasn't very good and the framing of the shots were not correct. When doing this again we made sure that we followed the rule of thirds and framed it so there is more room for flashbacks. After filming the scene on the train, we went to the golf club where we re-shot some of the poker scene shots. We started by doing the shots of the stairs. The problem with this was that we had to use a piece of material to block the light out of the windows and you can see that in the shot, so we waited till about 4pm when it was darker and shot it then so we didn't need to cover the window up. We then did an appropriate shot for my reaction after winning on the split screen shot. The new shot shows me leaning back and shows my reaction which is what we needed. Also we re-shot the spinny shot, we did encounter some problems when re filming this as we couldn't find a good way of maintaining the same speed when spinning it round, but eventually we think we got a decent shot. Lastly we did the exit from the golf club. The feedback we got for the shot was good, but I noticed that there is the shadow of Matteo on the right, so we re filmed this without any problems. On Tuesday, we will upload the videos and start editing on these new shots.

10/11/11

Today we made a shot list of what we need to re-shoot after our feedback from our First cut. We decided that we need to take advantage of the long weekend we have next week and use that time to do this filming. We decided that we need to re do all of the lip syncing on the train and frame the shot better, so that you can see more of the window so it gives extra room to put the flashbacks on. Also the walking down the street shot where i am lip syncing. The poker scene also needs some of it to be re shot, this includes walking up and down the stairs, the entrance (dusk rather than night), the spinny shot, need to keep a better pace and the last shot of the split screen shot.

Revised Production Schedule

Our schedule is quite simple, we plan to film on Monday afternoons and edit that in our lesson on Tuesday, and obviously other free time we have, such as weekends etc.

Editing 8/11/11

Today we edited what we filmed yesterday. We encountered some problems when editing. As we tried a scene of 'match on action' while lip syncing we found that the shot was to quick and didn't showcase the lip syncing very well. After putting on the timeline on premier, we found that we will probably have to re-shoot this.

Filming 7/11/11

Today once we had all finished our lessons, we all met up and decided to re-shoot the lip syncing scene of me walking down a rough road. For this we travelled to Waltham Cross and found a good alley where we shot this. After a quick look on the camera the lip syncing is much better and the location is much better as well. Tomorrow we will edit the scene

Filming 26th and Editing 27th October

Yesterday Me and Ryan filmed some extra scenes at my house, we tried to contact Laurence but couldn't get hold of him. The scenes are of me emptying money onto the table and there is a shot of me rummaging through the empty cupboards, we placed the camera inside the cupboard which looked quite good. The shots will be used as flashbacks to emphasise his 'Underdog' status. Tomorrow we are going to edit as arranged.

These are the flashbacks after they were edited into our production.

First Cut Feedback

Yesterday we showed our teacher and the rest of the class the first cut of our production. Then after showing the class our production we would receive feedback showing us how to improve it. Before the showing we knew what the main things we needed to change and we can re-shoot and edit again to keep on improving the production so we can achieve a higher grade. The feedback we got for our production was as follows, the comments in brackets are my ideas to how we could improve on the feedback given:

Holding shot steady- Unsteady shot on train, need to cut away or superimpose other shots. (We know we have to re-shoot this as not only is the shot not steady but the lip syncing isn't very good)

Framing a shot- Vary shot height, use this to represent characters mood (We can use high or low angle shots to show that he is the underdog.
- More dramatic shot after lyrics "got my cloak and dagger". (We could possibly cut to another shot using sharp, up tempo editing)

Appropriate Material- Make shots of leaving station and walking along bleak streets more interesting. (Going to re-shoot on Monday, better location etc)
- A reaction shot when he wins the money (could use different angles to show emotion?)

Selecting Mise en Scene- Staircase shot; not attractive (make the shot shorter)
- Build more of a storyline (use of flashbacks of him before the poker game)

Editing for Meaning- On the train need a more dramatic shot as the electric guitar kicks in (Possibly flash forward to what his life could be like after he has won the money)

Use of sound with images/editing- Lip syncing needs to be improve (Re-shoot all lip syncing shots, emphasis words)

After looking at the feedback given, it shows that there is space for alot of improvement and I think that maybe using green screen could show our different skills.
